Frequently Asked Questions

1.Q: My Breast Pump’s Suction Power is weak/ My breast pump has no power at all. What do I do?

BelleMa M Series (Effective Pro® with IDC™, Mango®, Mango Plus®)

Please do the following troubleshooting steps which pertain to your breast pump suction power:

1.               Make sure that the membrane & valve are installed correctly and attached properly. There should be a tiny slot on the valve to fasten the membrane.

2.               Make sure that the membrane fits the valve body snugly. There should be a tiny slot on the valve to fasten the membrane securely to the valve. Please note that frequent use or improper sterilization method can cause aging on the membrane. If the membrane has aged and worn out, this will result to leaks, chips, cracks or holes which affect the suction performance. If you notice aging on the membrane, please replace it with a new one.  (Your Breast Pump should come with extra membranes. Replacement Parts are also available at www.bellema-usa.com)

3.               Make sure that the silicone cushion on each pump fits tightly unto the breast shield. The silicone cushions have edges that should mould perfectly across the flange edges. Make sure both edges of the silicone cushion and the flange are fastened together perfectly.

4.               Make sure that the damper, which is located under the lid of the flange is properly attached to the grid. Check on the cap plug (the small round plastic attached on the round inner ring of the lid) and make sure it is attached tightly. Make sure that there are no water drops on all the parts inside the damper cap or lid.  The parts inside the flange cap or lid such as: cap plug, grid and the seal ring must be dry with no water drops.

5.               Check the tubing making sure that it is not kinked, bent or twisted. The tubing must be straightened to ensure proper air flow.  If you notice water condensation or milk inside the tubing, clean and air dry.  The tubing must always be dry and checked every each use.

6.               Check to make sure the flange is well secured and tightly fastened to the tubing. If you are using a Battery Pack, make sure that it is fully charged (M Series).

All the above troubleshooting instructions must be followed. Failure to follow any of these instructions will result to a weak suction or no suction at all. If all the above steps have been followed and you are still having weak suction or no suction, some parts or accessories of your breast pump might be deformed or ruptured due to the aging process. If this is the case, please call BelleMa Co. or visit us at www.bellema-usa.com to order and purchase replacement parts.

BelleMa Melon® XN-2203H2 (Piston Motor)

Please do the following troubleshooting steps which pertain to your breast pump suction power:

1.               Refer to the User Manual for part numbers. Please make sure that Part #2 (Inner Cap) and Part #3 (Single Connector) are installed correctly. It is very important that both of these 2 parts are fastened properly, if not please re-install.

2.Q: What do I do if milk gets into the tubing?

BelleMa M Series (Effective Pro® with IDC™, Mango®, Mango Plus®)

All the BelleMa M-Series: Mango®, Mango Plus® and the Effective Pro® with IDC™ are all Closed System.  It means that these models are designed to prevent milk backflow. Below are some other steps you may follow to avoid milk backflow:

1.      Adjust the pumping power to a lesser level if your breastmilk is relatively abundant or viscous.

2.      Try releasing the pressure between your breast and the silicone cushion if you notice that the milk is all gathered inside the flange and is not streaming down to the collection bottle.

3.      Do not overfill the collection bottle.  If the milk is goes beyond 100ml, change to a new collection bottle.

BelleMa Melon® XN-2203H2 (Piston Motor)

The BelleMa Melon Double® has Anti-Backflow Design. Please follow these steps to prevent milk backflow:

1.       Adjust the pumping power to a lesser level if your breastmilk is relatively abundant or viscous.

2.       If you notice that milk has gotten into the tubing or got sucked into the flange, if you notice any part that is damaged or the flange damper is not installed correctly, please stop pumping immediately. Clean and air dry or replace with new parts prior to using your breast pump.

3.       Try releasing the pressure between your breast and the silicone cushion if you notice that the milk is all gathered inside the flange and is not streaming down to the collection bottle.

4.       Do not overfill the collection bottle.  If the milk is goes beyond 100ml, change to a new collection bottle.

3.Q: My breast pump is running smoothly but I am unable to pump breast milk (or less quantity), what do I do?

Bellema M Series (Effective Pro® with IDC™, Mango®, Mango Plus®)

In most cases, this problem occurs when there is breast engorgement or your breast milk is relatively abundant and has viscosity (being thick or sticky).

1.       If your breast milk is relatively abundant, you can use your hand first to squeeze some milk out before using the breast pump.

2.       If you are experiencing breast engorgement, place a warm towel on the engorged breast, and use thumb massage from the bottom of your breast up to the nipple for 10-15 minutes. After this process, you may then use the breast pump.

3.       It is recommended to pump every 2 to 3 hours, including breastfeeding hours. If you are still in postnatal care, you must pump on each breast for 15 minutes according to your milk secretion. Do not pump for over 20 minutes to avoid mammary damage.

4.       If you have large and sagging breasts, hold your breast and massage gently while pumping milk to help with your milk flow.

If you experience pain or discomfort from pumping, stop immediately and consult a Breastfeeding Specialist or a Lactation Consultant. Improper use of breast pump may result to breast tissue damage or mastitis.

BREASTFEEDING WISDOM: Breast milk is made ‘on demand’. Think of your breasts as a  Factory of breast milk and not Storage. The more milk is taken from your breasts through feeding and pumping,  the more milk will be produced to replace it. As soon as the breast is full, it sends a message to the “milk making factory” to slow production.  As soon as the breast is empty, the ‘milk factory’ increases its production.  The greater the demand, the more production it will be!

4.Q: How do I clean and maintain my Bellema breast pump?

BelleMa M Series (Effective Pro® with IDC™, Mango®, Mango Plus®)

A: Cleaning and maintenance are summed up on these 2 simple steps (Please refer to your User Manual for more detailed cleaning instructions):

1.   All parts that come in contact to your body and breastmilk must be washed and cleaned every each use. These parts are the following:  silicone cushion, damper and inner parts, (cap plug, grid and seal ring), cap or lid, flange, membrane, valve, milk bottle, etc.  Wash these parts with a regular detergent and sterilize in boiling water for 2 to 3 minutes. Indoor Air Dry after washing.

IMPORTANT:

a.   Membrane must not be boiled or steamed too long to avoid aging.

b.   The Breast Pump contains very small parts such as membrane, etc. that can easily be misplaced or lost. The Breast pump will not function effectively and may lose suction power if these tiny parts are not present in the assembly.

2.   Parts that do not come in contact with your body or the breast milk can be cleaned once a week and does not require sterilization or boiling. These parts are the following:  flange cover, tubing, inner cap plug, bottle stands, bottle cap converter.  Indoor Air Dry after washing and store properly. Flange must be air dried to function properly.
